This shield was collected in Sjuru in the Central Asmat area. Typical for these shields are the size and the rectangular shape. The shield is decorated with very stylized flying foxes, which is associated with aggressive and successful headhunting.
The shield was a protection against arrows not only because of the fact you can hide behind it but also the symbols on the shield gave protection. The magical power of the shield gave the carrier power and courage. Asmat shield were made for a shield feast, which initiated a head-hunting expedition.
