Yoruba, divination cup
23 cm
Such bowls were used in rituals in which destiny or prediction (ifa) was divined. Ifa divination was used to transcribe the wisdom of Orunmila, the spirit of
wisdom and prophecy in Yoruba mythology. A priest taps rhythmically on a tray with a tapper
to ask for the help of Orunmila. A divination bowl like this one is used to keep the sixteen sacred palm nuts.
