The duyu is a ritual bowl. The ordinary content of the duyu was rice wine, which was consumed in large quantities by the participants in certain rituals. The intoxicating helped the priest to reach an altered state of awareness facilitating possession by the spirits. When the bowl has a smaller side bowl used for spices, like this one, it was also used to serve food.
