Papua, Asmat, Cicak Shield

This shield is from the Cicak area, they are very large and have a pointed top and a flat bottom. They are decorated with large geometric or floral motifs. The shield was a protection against arrows not only because of the fact you can hide behind it but also the symbols on the shield gave protection. The magical power of the shield gave the carrier power and courage. Asmat shield were made for a shield feast, which initiated a head-hunting expedition.
