Arnhem Land, club or clapping stick

45 cm
This object is probably used in ceremonies. The mimi are tall thin spirit figures from Arnhem Land. They are so thin that a strong wind can be dangerous for them that is why they only appear on windless days and nights. Most of the time they live in their rocky cavers. Mimi’s have taught the first humans how to hunt, dance, sing and paint.
Ex-collection Maggie de Moor, she worked together with Thomas Vroom in the Songlines gallery in Amsterdam.
